If my Grandpa Art Penner was still alive, today would be his 102nd birthday. He always said he wanted to live to be 100, but sadly he was given a bad blood transfusion which gave him hepatitis back in the 80s. He died in 1990. He would have LOVED Matthew if he had lived longer. :( He was one of those grandpas that let me get away with anything. I was his first grandchild. When I was about 7 (around 1975-76) and at my grandparents house in Perryton, TX for Christmas, he said he would let me drive his truck while we were out running around town. (It is a tiny town.) He just said we would stop by the house and make sure it was ok with my mom. Well, my mom said, NO! You are way too young to drive! Well, I remember thinking that she was being overly cautious and that her decision shouldnt even matter. I mean, my Grandpa was older than her, so he should outrank her! How else would I learn unless someone taught me?!? I was already chomping at the bit to drive at that age. I liked cars more than boys. I still kind of do..... Anyway, my Grandpa had a history of fast driving as well as my Dad and I. It is genetic. My grandpa was on his way to meet his brother around around 1958, and he took the normal route to his house. This was in Balko, Oklahoma. He was 46 at the time, which is my age right now. Well, when he drove up, his brother had a wild look on his face. He asked my grandpa, How did you get here from that direction? My grandpa said, just the way I always do, I drove here! His brother Arnie said, but the bridge is out! Well, it turns out that my grandpa was flying so fast down the road in his 57 Oldsmobile, that he became airborne and flew right over the broken bridge and landed on the other side just fine. He didnt even notice it was out. Yep, thats my Grandpa!
