If my father wasnt listening to his own music late into the night, - TopicsExpress

If my father wasnt listening to his own music late into the night, hed be listening to our music as wed play it in our familys music room. There were much more opportunities to share musical experiences back in my day, and hed often take some of our generations highly poetic music and use it as a teaching tool in his classroom. Anyway, one night I was listening to Janis Ians song Tea & Sympathy which is a rather dark and tortured piece, frankly the kind of poetry and lyrics I was often drawn to. I absolutely loved this song, for reasons I couldnt explain. He was at his desk, back to me, the record on and playing while I was gliding around the room in my flannel flowered night gown in a dreamy state. I remember first the tsk...which was his way of saying, This is questionable. But, he didnt stop me from listening and getting caught up in the music. He was a wonderful father, opened-minded, romantic. Anyway, when I lifted the needle to play it but again, he simply said, Be careful with that song, Cindy. A gentle warning of its darkness and potential influence on me. ~ Decades went by and I had long forgotten about this song, my father long gone from this world, when one night I came upon this video. In every way, it captured the feeling I experienced when listening to this song as a young, romantic girl. He would have approved the use of the images from the great play, The Phantom of the Opera, and I know he would have remembered, as I still do, that night when in his way, seemingly working and listening at the same time, he was also parenting with a gentle, knowing finesse. The song no longer makes me think of some lost or maybe someday love. It makes me think of my beloved father. Tsk.....;) youtube/watch?v=EmHXRJMxYCQ
