If my mother were alive, she certainly wouldnt be involved with FaceBook, (nor do I think shes checking it from the hereafter), but today would be her birthday. I just wanted to acknowledge that fact. I went to the cemetery this evening (been sick thus skipped church today and didnt go out at all til 6:30 to get boiled peanuts, of course, and decided to go by the cemetery). (Surely, youve heard the expression, Starve a cold, get boiled peanuts for a fever, right?) Its an interesting ritual we have to go back and visit tombstones. But its a ritual we share with the magnificent elephant--going back to the place of burial--so it must carry deep meaning perhaps even beyond our own understanding. I miss her every day. It was dark there--Ive never been to the cemetery at night. It wasnt as weird and creepy as it sounds. Just pointed my car lights toward that direction and left my brothers and parents a boiled peanut. I left my favorite brother two. Just in case he was watching. A boiled peanut and a rest in peace for each of them. If you still have your parents or parent or family this holiday season, treasure that while you can, if you can. I know sometimes the level of dysfunction makes the treasuring difficult or impossible. I get that and experience it myself. But if we can express whatever love or kindness we have toward family, I assure you, well be glad we did. One day, our chances to be kind or to offer loving words or express our devotion with flowers or soup or casserole or a funny card will be no more. Sometimes we have the luxury of knowing the end days are near. Other times, were stunned by the difficult news all at once from out of nowhere and are left reeling... So, if you have kind words to say, ....
