If not ourselves great, we like to explain why others are so. We - TopicsExpress

If not ourselves great, we like to explain why others are so. We are stingy in our praise to merit, but generous in our praise to chance. The excellence which it loudly denies to others it silently claims for itself. It possesses the means of covering the small with the glory of the great. It adds to failure that which it takes from success and shortens the distance between those in front and those in the rear. Even here there is an upward tendency worthy of notice and respect.
