If one’s opinion has never been subjected to and tried by - TopicsExpress

If one’s opinion has never been subjected to and tried by rigorous cross-examination, it probably isn’t worth much. If one lacks the capacity to keep a level head when one’s views are challenged, one’s voice will be of limited use in most real world situations, where dialogue and dispute is the norm and where we have to think in conversation with people who disagree with us. I have always felt that because people are only taught what to think and not how to think, they cannot handle arguments, debates, challenges, and disputes. If I know from personal experience that In.N.Out makes the best hamburgers, it is from my experience not just from eating their burgers but from eating at many burger joints. If I believe McDonalds is best I should feel comfortable enough with my belief to try In.N.Out, and when I find it better, to concede that point But, If however I have only ever had McDonalds because i was told it was best, and some one tells me In.N.Out is better... because my belief is simply based in what I was told... I will get defensive and argue rather than testing it. The problem of course is as Christians, I believe we have the In.N.Out of faith... but most of us eat it because we were told it was best. We rail against McDonalds but we really havent tested it or done the research to be sure. so even though we do have the best we cant defend it any better than the McDonalds guy... Ok... so my thoughts veered off slightly from the article... but... mmmm... hamburgers! :)
