If people could see depression, they would see it differently - - TopicsExpress

If people could see depression, they would see it differently - just as they can seea a broken leg, heart disease, paralysis, cancer and even AIDS. But depression doesnt show as all of the above. A tumour can eat away at the brain, and its effects can be seen; but depression eats away at the mind, and its effects are often brushed off, explained away, even ignored. If a diabetic suffers a low and rings in sick, its accepted; if a person suffering from depression does the same, more often than not it is treated with suspicion. A person with depression can no more pull himself together or deal with it than an AIDS sufferer can banish a virus, a cancer patient pull out a tumour, or a paraplegic just get up and walk. Im not trying to undermine or detract from any of the aforementioned cruelties of life; merely trying to bring about a perspective. Depression (like most mental illnesses) is caused by a chemical imbalance; therefore it is something over which we have limited control. Some would say that depression doesnt kill, that it isnt a terminal illness. But it does, and it is.
