If people had *any* idea how much time, work, effort, worrying, learning, and money goes into being a photographer, even an amateur one, I suspect they would be much more respectful or at least less put-off when those photographers very nicely say no to working for free. Especially repeatedly. For just a small few-hour event, I can spend days prepping for the shoot, hours on the shoot itself, days or weeks processing photos afterward, and meanwhile Ive spent thousands of my own dollars on the gear (cameras, lenses, filters, flashes, etc), website hosting, photoshop and other photography software, and years of time and effort into learning how to do it all. Nevermind how much more work a BIG event is. How insulted would you feel if you had invested years of effort into your preferred craft, only to have people you barely even know expect you to gift it upon them for free because you have a real day job to support yourself, so its not like you need my money for this one, right? What is it about photography that makes consumers think its worthless or effortless work? If someone just assumed YOU would put two or three or four weeks of effort into a free job without any respect or even understanding of the time and effort you put in, how would you feel?
