If pictures could talk #2. Berries and Cherry Rhubarb. Bobby Sutherlands rhubarb plot on the future corner of Michigan and Ada around 1915. After WWI damaging frosts and an agriculture depression forced many Glendora ranchers to experiment with new fruits and vegetables. Back then, a box of 50 oranges sometimes sold for only $1.00 per crate. We needed to do something to bring in money for the ranch or we would go bankrupt, Bob recalled years later. Bob did so well with growing and selling produce, he convinced brother WJ Sutherland to move to the Carlsbad. Within a few years the Sutherlands operated one of the largest Cherry Rhubarb farms in the USA. The Sutherlands werent the only ones in Glendora looking for greener pastures. Jim Preston asked his younger cousin Walter to help him with his plots in Glendora. They made a good team and later formed a partnership planting berries, asparagus and rhubarb throughout Southern Cal. In 1927 Preston moved on to start a new business in Norwalk while Walter did the same in the little town of Buena Park. Of course, no one would have guessed that Walter and his wife Cordelia Knott s would become world famous selling boysenberries and cooking fried chicken dinners.
