If the U.S. wants a stable Middle East & wishes to limit its micromanagement there, it will have to find a country already there that is modern stable influential & effective w/ which it can work. Iran is that country. The patriarchal & patronizing sanctions and threats from the U.S. & Israel need to stop. Engagement & cooperation need to begin if the U.S. is ever to be successful in its mission. Iran controls the Shia government of Iraq, as it always has for decades. No amount of bombing will change this. It only strengthens the Shia leadership there. Perhaps diplomacy will.
