If the United States really wants to improve access to health care - TopicsExpress

If the United States really wants to improve access to health care for its average- or lower-income citizens, why are basic medicines with no risk of abuse such as amoxicillin still only available through a doctors visit and prescription?? While some people may try to make the argument that someone mistakenly diagnosing themselves with a bacterial infection could be overlooking a more serious issue that theyre not trained to spot, the same could be said for taking Tylenol or Sudafed. Scared that the over-usage of antibiotics will lead to resistant super-bacteria? Antibiotics have been available over-the-counter for decades in countries all over the world with no deadly pandemic having occurred from their usage yet. Requiring doctors visits simply to acquire an extremely cheap antibiotic seems to do little more than line the health care industrys pockets and prevent people who cant afford a visit to the doctor for relatively minor problems from getting the treatment they need to recover more quickly and improve their quality of life. This is just *another* one of the major policy mistakes by the FDA...
