If there is one thing I would like everyone to remember when riding a western horse, it would be stay off his ^/$×=^&£# face. Particularly if you ride in a leverage (shanked) bit. If you need constant pressure to keep him under control or tuned in, you need to go back to the training pen. I havent seen a photo of a soft horse on facebook in I dont know how long. Many behavioral issues are caused by constant mouth pressure. (Gaping mouth, rearing, head tossing, riding with their nose elevated, rooting, even anxiety). A horse learns to be soft by being taught to release to softer and softer pressure gradually. So what does harder and harder pressure or continuous pressure teach? The opposite! A horse learns from the release of pressure, so give it! And if you are too anxious about giving your horse his face or dont ride with actual slack in your reins, ride an atv, or get lessons with a competent trainer. So in short... Teach your horse to leg yield, learn how to ask your horse to collect, TEACH YOUR HORSE TO BACK SOFTLY, and stay out of his DAMN mouth!
