If there was an award for a bass guitarist in the soulful/funky/jazzy vein, who was strong and confident, always with the deep pocket put first in order of priority , a greasy left hand with an outstanding slow hand feel and ever inviting sense of expression, with soulful delivery of every note, not always needing to push the envelope of rapid fire subdivision, but occasionally going there with swift command, and a consistently pleasant and listenable, likable tone through all dynamic ranges, the ability to compose in a variety of styles and feels, with an instantly identifiable personality and presence in all or most of their recordings, and with a really great hat, I would nominate Marcus Miller. =)
