If this isnt a perfect picture of the struggle within families, and the populace in general, I do not know what is. Doesnt matter what you watch; it is the fact that you are watching. Is it not a most offensive event to try and talk to someone over a blaring TV? The diminishing authority of the family in general has undoubtedly made it more difficult for parents to deal with the television problem. As the government, the schools, the medical profession, and other outside institutions have made inroads into the families hegemony, PARENTS HAVE GROWN MORE DEPENDENT ON THESE INSTITUTIONS and less confident in their own abilities to raise children ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN IDEAS AND PRINCIPLES. Parents are less likely to rely on common sense and their private assessment of what is right or wrong when confronted with a problem ... ; they tend to wait for the government or the school or at least the child experts to tell them what to do.
