If we all cant agree on this, then we cant agree on anything: the lottery shouldnt exist. The lottery especially shouldnt exist in a country where most other forms of gambling are either prohibited or highly regulated. Hello? The government runs its own gambling ring. Did you catch that? Just like the mob, the government runs a gambling operation. A gambling operation that almost exclusively serves poor people; poor people who are likely on government assistance. Thats probably why the We accept EBT and Buy lotto tickets here! signs are right next to each other at the grocery store. And were OK with this? The government runs a gambling ring, and then uses Congress to put its competition out of business. And were OK with that? Do you know the difference between the lottery -- a legal form of State sponsored gambling -- and, say, sports betting -- a mostly illegal form of private gambling? Well, with the latter you can actually win. And higher income folks will do it. With the former, you cant win and mostly poor people, with no disposable income, participate. Yet the former is sanctioned and the latter is banned. I just stood behind a woman at the gas station while she spent 60 dollars on scratch offs and Powerballs. Thats probably why this is on my mind. But Id feel this way regardless.
