If we are going to have a Shorten-Albanese leadership contest, I think on balance Albanese is the better choice. I say this despite being a supporter of the Victorian Right and in general an admirer of Shorten. But I think Shorten’s actions in the two leadership changes, whether or not I think they were justified, have left him too damaged to be an effective leader at present, when the party needs to put Rudd-Gillard behind it and focus on fighting Abbott. I think Albanese is better placed to lead a united Caucus in parliament and to re-energise the party base.
