If we have a look on the situation of Muslims in Mauritius, The Jummah Masjid is recognised as the Islamic authority by Mauritians, its controlled by the sunni surti memon society which seems that only a surti can obtain membership which entails that only a surti can control(does any teaching of Islam approve that)..then we have the masajid of which majority are sunna jamaat ones, and majority of them have imams, now a question may be asked, on which benchmark are the matawalis considering to recruit somebody and appoint him as an Imam? does any of our Imam possesses any certificate from a recognised body to prove that theyre ready to act as a masjids khatib? if not then its a great zulm to Muslims of Mauritius, and the Jummah Masjids silence is to be condemned. Now if we have a look at what we consider as Ulama of Mauritius..Does the mere fact that one has gone studying abroad makes one an alim? Of course not, one has to complete an alim course from a renowned institution, now how many of the Mawlanas are real alim? are the Jummah Masjid monitoring that? It is its job as its deemed as the Islamic Authority by the government. We have a mufti of caliber but unfortunately he doesnt speak neither English nor French nor Creol..then how will he be able to give proper fatawa with the Mauritian social setups well considered? how many youths does understand urdu? and who is the most needy of guidance today? WE IN MAURITIUS NEEDS TO WAKE UP!
