If you are anywhere from a little bit chubby upwards in body fat terms, going on a very low carb diet for a short period is an effective way to increase insulin sensitivity. I think around 10-14 days is a good starting point but be sure to replace calories from dense carbohydrate sources with healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, butter, nuts and seeds, avocado and fat from pastured meats. Remember that the calorie yield from protein and carbohydrate is 4 cal per gram whereas with fat you get 9 cal per gram, therefore you only need around half the amount in weight so be careful not to over-eat. After the low carb period, simply add starchy carbs after a workout (1 or 2 rice cakes and organic jam would do) and see how you respond. If youre still losing fat after a week or two then add in more in the post workout period and also with meals throughout the evening on training days.
