If you are curious about the chance of snow in the forecast for - TopicsExpress

If you are curious about the chance of snow in the forecast for WNC Thursday night into Friday, I have your answer! This will be a typical Northwest Flow snow and should effect the high mountains(mainly above 3500) the most. That being said, dont be surprised to see a few flakes even as far south as the Buncombe/Henderson Co. line. After the cold front passes through tomorrow, backside moisture will propel itself down off the Great Lakes, and back up against the Appalachian Mountains. This will create the upslope phenomenon that effectively wrings the moisture out of clouds. Think of this as the clouds being a sponge with the mountains acting as a metaphorical hand that will twist the sponge, and bring out all the moisture within. As the drops of water(snow) fall from the sponge(clouds) they land on the areas of highest elevation. Now if we add a fan to this equation (representing our 700mb winds), the drops of water(snow) falling from the sponge(clouds) are likely to disperse themselves farther away from directly below if the fan is on high, compared to it blowing at low. When that fan is turned on high(strong 700mb upper level winds), there is a much better chance of that water(snow) landing somewhere other than directly below the sponge. This is why flakes sometimes make it to the valley and other times they do not. It all has to do with the amount of water in the sponge and what setting the fan is on! I hope that makes since! I will update on totals tomorrow. Also watch for a big time cool down on the way thanks to Typhoon Nuri churning in the West Pacific. The 5-10 day forecast is very uncertain but this extremely large system will move north, throwing a wrench in the gears of weather that will effectively push a polar blast down south. I will update further when the details are hammered out more but get ready for the cold! Have a great Wednesday!
