If you are ever buying gifts for children, do you make conscious - TopicsExpress

If you are ever buying gifts for children, do you make conscious decisions about what you choose? Do you think about things like the environment when you make that purchasing decision? Do you think about if and how gender stereotypes might be reinforced through toys and gifts? Do you actively seek out locally made gifts? Or gender neutral gifts? On the telly this morning, Greens Senator Larissa Waters kicked off what became a social media storm by talking about gift giving in the lead up to Christmas and No Gender December - a campaign founded by Thea Hughes and Julie Huberman, who hope it will prompt toy companies to become more inclusive in their marketing. Senator Waters made comments including: starkly separate aisles of pink and blue might seem harmless, but setting such strong gender stereotypes at early ages can have long-term impacts, including [on] self-perception and career aspirations. Senator Waters said that outdated stereotypes about girls and boys perpetuate gender inequality, which feeds into very serious problems such as domestic violence and the gender pay gap. smh.au/federal-politics/political-news/no-gender-december-greens-senator-calls-for-end-to-genderbased-toys-20141202-11y4ro.html No Gender December is a campaign initiative of Australian based parent group Play Unlimited. nogenderdecember/ In response to the Senators calls for people to think about gift giving choices, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has responded by saying he doesnt believe in that kind of political correctness. theguardian/world/2014/dec/02/no-gender-december-abbott-criticises-bid-to-end-gender-stereotypes-in-toys?CMP=ema_632
