If you are going as Shrek - you paint yourself green. If you are going as a smurf you paint yourself blue. If you are going as a pumpkin you paint your face orange. If you re going a Spike from Buffy you make yourself paler I have done my reading and research and have a fairly decent understanding of the history of blackface. But I think we need to make a distinction between blackface and dressing as a character. As with just about any halloween costume intent should be an important factor. No one had a problem with black men making themselves into white women for a movie. Playing into stereotypes of white women is OK for a black person to do. And Im fine with that because their intent was not mean spirited. I think as a society we need to rethink what we apply the term blackface to.
