If you are interested and can view this video, it explains little of what Donnie has, Lewy Body Dementia and what we are going through. This disease is a terminal diagnosis and how he is today, is the best day he will ever have this side of heaven. While this video explains the what, it does little to explain the impact this horrible rollercoaster ride has on both our lives. Can you imagine not being able to have a 2 minute conversation with someone because you cannot remember what you were talking about. Can you imagine being married to the kindest man you have ever known and who would never be hateful to anyone and now not being able to let him go into the gas station by himself because he gets so upset over imagined problems and yells at the clerk. Imagine being so afraid, you cannot be alone and that there are people hiding in your shower. Imagine not knowing what year it is, or what day of the week or who your great grandson belongs to, or that your brother died or even if you ate dinner or not. Imagine being attacked every night in your dreams and having to fight off your attacker and acting out that dream night after night. Imagine not being able to recognize where you are even though you have been to that place or traveled that road every day for 40 years. Think about your legs becoming so stiff it is difficult to get up out of a chair or to walk without assistance. Think about not being able to remember what someone said 2 minutes ago or even if that person was there. Imagine not remembering anything that happened today. That is all what Lewy Body Dementia does. Now imagine there is no cure and there is no government help for the care of these patients, even when they become so violent they cannot be cared for at home. This is one of the fastest growing health issues in the United States and if dementia has not already impacted your family, it probably will at some point and it could even be you. I am not explaining this to get sympathy, I am explaining this so people will understand this is not about normal forgetfulness and when you say Oh I do that too, you do not understand the real impact of this disease. I also hope you will take this disease seriously and help by finding a way to support the research to find a cure for all forms of dementia.
