If you are joining us in reading through Psalms and Proverbs today’s Psalms are Psalm 60-62. The devotion is taken from Psalm 61:1-4. “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” Many times in the book of Psalms you will read where David or one of the psalmist cries out to the Lord for his salvation. Psalm 61 is no different. And because Hebrew poetry uses parallels to describe the action that is desired, you pick up on the idea that it is an intense desire not just one of passing need. David uses two words in the first verse to describe what he wants God to do. The first word David uses gives the idea of the person paying attention to what is being asked. The second word David uses shows the picture of a parent stooping down to listen more closely to what the child is asking. So, picture your child running up to you tugging on your dress or pant leg and saying, “mommy/daddy I have a secret to tell you. Let me whisper in your ear.” David takes this idea a little further through painting the picture of a child running toward you and calling from a long-distance asking the parent to pick him up and hold him securely, protecting them from whatever is bothering them. Many times a child will also express a desire to live with their parents forever. Several times in my life I’ve heard a young child say something like, “mommy I want to marry you,” or “I want to be with you forever.” This is the picture that David is painting. One of a child who so desirous of his parent that he or she runs up to them, asks them for protection, and then stating the desire that they want to be with them forever. Is this a desire you have in your relationship with God? Do you feel like you can run up to him, crawl up on his lap and that he will protect you from whatever is bothering you? David says to just do it. Cry out to God, let him pick you up and protect you from whatever danger is in your path.
