If you are looking to take a magical, fantasy journey then look no further than the enchanting fairytale of Edward Scissorhands, it is a movie suitable for the whole family but in my own opinion I think it would appeal to those youngsters aged 12 years and upwards. Edward Scissorhands tells the story of Edward a young ‘man’ who has been created by an inventor, acted by the late and fabulous Vincent Price better known for his roles in numerous low budget horror movies. The audience follow a lady called Peg Boggs, superbly acted by Dianne Wiest. Peg is an Avon representative in her local community but is finding it difficult to make ends meet, overlooking the suburb is a grand mansion with a distinctive medieval appearance. Peg enters through the big, iron gates and is surprised by what she finds; a splendidly elaborate garden full of topiary animals which have been lovingly crafted by someone. Edward Scissorhands is such a unique movie with beautiful sets and a spellbinding soundtrack which draws the viewer in. The hero is Edward Scissorhands himself a role played to absolute perfection by Johnny Depp; Peg discovers him hiding in the shadows of the attic in the mansion and gently encourages him out. The few minutes that follow are a real treat as Peg attempts to apply make-up to Edward’s cuts on his face, ‘the secret is in the blending’ she says. Dianne Wiest is perfectly cast as Peg, the mouse which would not say ‘boo’ to a goose ordinarily and who makes the bold decision to invite Edward Scissorhands to move in with her and her family. We are taken back to the days of Edward Scissorhands being created and learn how he comes to have long, scissor like hands. The days in the past are shot in black and white and the rest is shown in colour which is a nice touch to make it simple for the audience to relate between the varying times. Edward Scissorhands shows just how difficult life can be if your ‘face’ does not fit but then it also displays the way in which people can be convinced that you are actually one of them and make you welcome. Johnny Depp captures the innocence and confusion of being brought from his known and safe world into the unknown land of the suburbs! He learns how to eat involving a very funny scene with peas and he meets Kim, Winona Ryder, the daughter of Peg. Kim discovers Edward asleep in her bed as she returns home early from a camping trip with friends, there is complete chaos and her water bed is basically torn to shreds by Edward’s scissors. Edward Scissorhands also stars Alan Arkin as Peg’s patient husband Bill, after the shock of meeting Kim he offers Edward a shot of whisky which leaves Edward a little worse for wear. Edward Scissorhands is essentially a beautiful love story between Edward and Kim, she finds him captivating. The scene with her dancing underneath the exquisite angel ice sculpture as he creates it is pure magic but with every love story there is usually a baddie and Edward Scissorhand’s baddy comes in the shape of Jim, Anthony Michael Hall, he is Kim’s boyfriend and becomes envious of Edward when Kim begins protecting him and sticking up for him. The journey of Edward Scissorhands begins with an elderly version of Kim explaining the story of herself and Edward to her young granddaughter and the movie also concludes with the same scene. Throughout Edward Scissorhands we see him cutting women’s hair, dog’s coats, creating topiary statues all around the neighbourhood and being accepted by the locals. It is a wonderful movie with a spectacular cast and the usage of bright and vibrant colours contrasting against the black and white shots works perfectly. Edward Scissorhands is a charming story telling movie and not a fast paced action thriller, the audience will laugh and probably shed a tear or two. The main outstanding performances for me are Johnny Depp and Dianne Wiest as they seem to work well together, with strong supporting roles from Winona Ryder and Anthony Michael Hall. Edward Scissorhands is a wonderful movie to view at anytime but especially magical at Christmas.
