If you are saying that the Smiths own a car, it is the Smiths car. - TopicsExpress

If you are saying that the Smiths own a car, it is the Smiths car. If you are saying that the Smiths are in a car, it is said The Smiths are in a car. A proper name should NOT have an apostrophe to be plural. It does need one to be possessive. AND...dont change the -y to an -ie if your surname happens to be Blackbury...There are four Blackburys in that car and they have a ton of blackberries. Honestly, I do not understand the overuse of the poor little apostrophe...dont you think its tired by now?
