If you are tried of all those recycle, reuse and reboot big CGI spectacle movie, then here is something interesting for a change. Nightcrawler is a dirty, grubby, creepy movie; the kind that makes you feel like you need a wash after the credits have rolled. It’s a film that has much to say about the madness of the modern media, about how society has encouraged that insanity, and about the dangerous fallout of mass unemployment. And it’s a masterful directorial debut from screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) that features a grandstanding central performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal turns what could easily be seen as a grotesque moment into a greater metaphor for desperation in media. The tension he adds is what makes Nightcrawler such a knockout thriller, and a depraved black comedy.The director and his star have something interesting and even exciting on their hands. A thought-provoking and strangely hilarious feature that blends elements of drama and horror with the blackest of comedy, Nightcrawler is a film that truly gets under the skin. It’s a revelatory directorial debut from Dan Gilroy, while Jake Gyllenhall delivers a career-best performance as one of the year’s most interesting celluloid characters.
