Please register here. Keep in mind that this will not be an educational session, but a working meeting with experts, with the goal of developing substantive and constructive comments on the health study. The Maryland Environmental Health Network will send out study tools and recommended reading, to help you prepare to participate. Health Study Raises Serious Concerns Four themes have emerged from the health study, which was conducted by the Maryland Institute of Applied Environmental Health. These themes are: Unconventional natural gas development and production (UNGDP) in western Maryland is very likely to be harmful to the health of MD residents. Many of the potential impacts may be severe and/or irreversible. There is insufficient data in key areas to guide best practices. The industry has a history of secrecy and obstructing reasonable regulations that is detrimental to public health. Chesapeake PSR’s Response We are in the process of developing a detailed response to the study and how we believe it should influence Maryland’s decision on whether to move forward with hydraulic fracturing. We’ll issue an alert to our members sometime after the September 12th health symposium with more details. In the meantime, our campaign for no fracking secrets in Maryland is gaining attention. All three western Maryland newspapers have run editorials supporting our position. See the Frederick News-Post, the Cumberland Times, as well as The Republican of Oakland, which is subscription only. If you haven’t signed our no fracking secrets petition, please sign it here.
