If you are writing a statement for promotion and expect the dean - TopicsExpress

If you are writing a statement for promotion and expect the dean to have a favorable opinion of it, here are some suggestions: (i) keep it concise; (ii) be business-like: walk us through the relevant pieces on your cv without fluff - do not expect the dean to be wowed by your brilliance. (After you have seen a few dozen statements and hundreds of cvs, it turns out that people who have successful tenure applications look roughly the same (smart people are a dime a dozen in academics - we want to know what you have accomplished and, more importantly, what the promise is for future accomplishment as we extend a lifetime contract)). Dont try to impress with how smart you are. You are smart. But promotion is not an IQ test; (iii) tell us how to interpret your cv - do not allow any fluff at all to your cv (dont say, Facebook posting got 75 comments from faculty from all over) - help us to sort what you think is important and what is less important, as well as what is indicative of your future work and where you want your research to be in a few years (teaching is another matter, but that varies by institution - talk about that too and why your teaching is a good fit for your institution and give signs other than student evaluations of your teaching quality. (iv) do not use jargon, use language that an intelligent reader, even a dean, can understand. There is lots more. Common sense is the best medicine. Dont let your insecurity show like an undergraduate writing their first paper.
