If you can get past the media bias embedded throughout this presentation (typical of public radio), this story is proof positive that ordinary citizens can indeed get it done. The way the Hasidic Jews are getting it done in the East Ramapo, New York school district reminds me of the way things got done during the Reconstruction period, effecting the abolition of slavery. The abolitionists successfully utilized tools and avenues which the founding fathers had put in place, for just such a purpose. Despite the challenging circumstances (the Hasidic Jews of East Ramapo are basically a poverty-stricken people, of limited resources, and theirs has always been an un-welcomed voice in school affairs), they decided to go ahead and engage themselves. And boy has it made a difference!
