Celebrated as the Greatest Trojan Ever, Louis Zamperini, the USC track and field Olympian and inspirational speaker whose heroics as a WWII POW earned him international fame, was honored at yesterdays USC-ND football game. This American heros service earned him 3 Purple Hearts, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a POW medal. Angelina Jolie introduced The Spirit of Troys tribute to the late Zamperini as part of a larger USC effort to salute the Trojan legend, including the formation of a scholarship in his name awarded annually to a USC track and field athlete and the football team wearing “Z” decals on their helmets during the entirety of the 2014 season. He was named Grand Marshall for the 2015 Rose Parade, but recently died in July at 97. Joli is the director of the much-anticipated film, Unbroken (survival, resilience, redemption), chronicling Zamperinis life and opening Christmas day. Its called Unbroken because Im a stubborn Trojan. Theyd have to kill me before I gave in, explained Zamperini. He was one of the greatest Americans of all time who inspired millions through his courage and character. He often spoke on the topics of motivation and reconciliation, and was the embodiment of the USC motto, Fight On. He still is the only Trojan to win the NCAA outdoor mile championship, which he did twice some 75 years ago.
