If you closely watch the 1999 movie The Hurricane (starring Denzel Washington), at one point you can see a picture of Maharishi hanging on his cell wall. Apparently the director knew that Carter had learned TM and that that was helping him through his time in jail. The film tells the story of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, whose conviction for a triple murder was set aside after he had spent nearly 20 years in prison. The Hurricane depicts his life in prison and how he was freed by the love and compassion of a teenager from Brooklyn and his Canadian foster family. After 19 years in prison, a Federal District Court ruled in 1985 that the prosecution had committed grave constitutional violations and that his conviction was based on racism rather than facts. Carter was finally freed. He summed up his story by saying, Hate got me into this place, love got me out. He also said, I lived in hell for the first 49 years, and have been in heaven for the past 28 years. To live in a world where truth matters and justice, however late, really happens, that world would be heaven enough for us all. I always loved both the movie and the powerful Bob Dylan song about him. God bless Rubin Hurricane Carter, a man who, amazingly, was able to see the good and the positive in life despite the racism and injustice that landed him in jail for 19 years. What a man. bbc/news/27097854
