The UWC culture has given me the courage to dare to care and do it scared, the confidence to break out of my small-mindedness, and the craziness to live the dream.” Joyce Wong Samoutou, UWC Atlantic (United Kingdom), 93-95 After studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Joyce had a chance to go on a medical missionary trip to Gabon where she saw hundreds of lives transformed by simple cataract operations. She became determined to return to Africa with the pure devotion to better the lives of the people there. In 2012, she left her profession as a doctor in Leeds, UK to bring her whole family to set up the first eye clinic in the history of the Republic of Congo. She faces enormous challenges on a daily basis in building up the medical facilities, fundraising for her charity New Sight Congo, homeschooling her children and battling with water and power cuts. hk.uwc.org/Our-Impact/200-Joyce-Wong-Samoutou
