If you could travel back in time to observe the early church, it would look nothing like what we see today. There would be no pastor over a congregation. There would be no order of service. The Holy Spirit didnt make people gyrate. No large edifices were being built. Many of the saints assembled not weekly, but daily. Many did not assemble openly, but rather secretly for fear of persecution. They knew that choosing to believe that Jesus is the Christ meant putting their very lives at risk, and believed anyway. Church today is akin to buying a car. I choose the make and model I want. I decide which one I will be most comfortable in. I want one that requires little maintenance, but gets great mileage. I also need it to be the right color.
