If you had asked us last year whether we could imagine taking legal action against the Port Authority — or anyone, really — we probably would have laughed you out of the room. But then the fight came to us. And now, with help from Ecojustice lawyers, we’re going to court to seek an order quashing the Fraser Surrey Docks permit on grounds of procedural fairness and failure to consider climate impacts. At this point, taking legal action is the only alternative we have to protect ourselves, our families and our neighbours. We were heartened to learn that after we filed our court case, that both the City of Surrey and City of New Westminster intend to seek intervenor status in our case. They too must have concerns about whether this dirty coal project is a good neighbour and will contribute to the long-term well-being of our communities.
