If you have a deep chested dog like a Shepard, Great Dane or a Lab, you need to read this. Status Update By Nicole Noland I just read an article about a Salem Police K-9 being rushed to the vet because he has Torsion. This is important for you large dog owners to know. It can happen in a second, sometimes for no reason at all. Its called TORSION. Dogs with a deep chest ie. Shepards, Labs, Great Danes an so on... Their stomach is attached inside sitting like a hammock, so when a dog has a stomach full of food, water or even gas and is panting or running the stomach can flip or twist. This cuts off blood flow and more often then not, will kill the dog.Surgery to TRY to fix it is very expensive and rarely can the dog be saved. Ive had it happen to one of my dogs, many of my dog training clients have had it happen and my dad lost his Shepard to it also. Sometimes (especially in Shepards) it happens for no evident reason, the dog can just be laying around and all of the sudden act like they are hurt, or gasping for air. My dog was recovering from a surgery when it happened to him, he was trying to stretch himself out (like the downward facing dog yoga move) and his tongue had turned blue. MY ADVICE is when you feed your dog let him rest for at least a couple hours before exercise or big excitement. Same goes for if your dog tanks up on water, let him rest. If you have a day of fun planned, or a jog, make sure your dog has an empty stomach. Do not feed him directly after he plays either. It is much safer to have your dog exercise on a empty stomach, if you feel terribly bad give him a small cookie. Google Torsion in Dogs, this happens VERY often and I imagine most dog owners arent aware of it.
