If you have a young famikly member, who spends WAY to much face time with a computer. bring them out and we can let them talk to so some Ham around the world. Dave. Meet, talk with Valley ham radio operators News Release Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year many people find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate. In these cases, Amateur Radio is valuable. Radio operators, often called “hams,” provide backup communications for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Space Station. The public will have a chance to meet and talk with Terre Haute ham radio operators on June 22-23. Hams across the U.S. will be staging public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities. This annual event, called “Field Day,” is the climax of the weeklong “Amateur Radio Week” sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and back yards around the country. The Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at VFW Post 972 Recreation Area, 8170 Indiana 159 about 1.5 miles south of Riley, beginning at 2 p.m. June 22 and ending at 2 p.m. June 23. The public can see ham radio’s new capabilities and learn how to acquire an FCC radio license.
