If you have any interest in the video game industry, and you havent been watching Anita Sarkeesians Tropes vs. Women in Video Games on YouTube, you really should. Its a shocking look at the various ways in which female characters are consistently objectified, brutalized and humiliated through the industry, from the biggest studio games to the smallest indie titles. Six of the planned twelve videos have been released so far, and they are essential viewing to anyone who doubts the levels of misogyny that run through the most profitable and influential entertainment of our modern society. And of course, Sarkeesian has been receiving major backlash for it since she announced the project two years ago. Keyword: announced. Just the very thought of exposing the mistreatment of women in games unleashed a fury of online harassment that would be unbelievable if it werent, you know, fully documented. If the guys who hacked her Wikipedia page, drew pictures of her getting raped by video game characters, and created Flash games in which you could punch her in the face werent so proud of their accomplishments. If they hadnt fully realized that their very actions prove what shes talking about. The halfway point of her series dropped last week, and in response, Sarkeesian was given a death threat (which is, sadly, not unusual for her). However, this one posted her address. And the address of her parents. I wish I could say that this shocks me, but in the video game play Ive written (which Id already dedicated to her), I wrote this very thing happening. Literally, this very thing. This is why Feminist Frequency exists. This is why Tropes vs. Women in Video Games exists and needs to be watched. And this is why I stand with Anita Sarkeesian.
