If you have followed Hand in Paw for a while, you may remember a sweet angel we rescued last year, named Athena. If you dont know her story, here it is: In August of 2013, a couple walking through a park in Duarte, heard desperate crying sounds. They followed the sounds to a trash bin in the park. Inside, they found a tiny, taped up box, and when they opened it, they found a beaten, senior Chihuahua, covered in tar, gasping for air, and crying screams of terror. They called Animal Control, who took this girl to be euthanized at our rescue vet. And then we got the call....we knew we had to save her; otherwise, the monster who did this to her, would get what he wanted. This poor girl had been abused all her life, her x-rays revealing several old injuries, and her level of fear revealing a lifetime of horrible mistreatment. If someone tried to touch her, she would throw herself on her back and scream, closing her eyes, as if to anticipate a strike. It was heartbreaking. We posted her story, and immediately, an extremely special woman and friend, Renee Freeman, contacted us because she wanted to meet little Athena and help however possible. She came to the hospital and held her, spoke to her gently, and hand-fed her soft food. It was love at first sight, and Athena felt at home in her arms. There are not many people like Renee; she knew Athena would be a challenge, because Athena was damaged so greatly physically and emotionally. But Renee was up for it and wholeheartedly accepted Athena. Athena adapted quickly to her new, loving home life. She had new doggy sisters, she enjoyed sun bathing, playing, eating, and sitting in her mommys arms. Renee gave her a lifetime of joy and love in just 16 months. So sadly and suddenly, Athena passed away last Friday; her little heart couldnt take any more, and she went peacefully, surrounded by her family. But we are so grateful for Renee, and all the love and happiness she gave Athena. She had the opportunity to feel safe, feel love and kindness, and to give Renee so much joy as well. We wish there were more people like Renee, who so willingly gave her all, and was so dedicated to giving Athena a beautiful life. We will always remember Athena, and the smile she had while in Renees arms. Thank you, Renee, for all you do; we love you, and what an honor it is to know you. The world would be a better place with more kind, compassionate people like you. We are so sorry for the loss of your sweet, beautiful Theenie.
