If you have never before delved into the Dead Hunger series, let me give you a little background. I wrote a book back in 1999 and self-published it long before it was easy. I laid the book out and had a friend, Stephen Tokai, design the cover for me. I found a printer and had 5,000 of them printed and shipped to me. At that print price, they cost me about $2.75 per book. I sold them for $19.95. Out of the Darkness: The Story of Mary Ellen Wilson is the creative nonfiction tale of a 9-year old girl who was severely abused, and was eventually rescued in 1874 by the ASPCA. THAT is why I had to write the book; after over 100 years, nobody had. After I sold out the first 5,000, I ordered another 3,000. Keep in mind, I boxed and shipped every book or case of books ordered. I marketed to social workers and child protection agencies. I ended up on CSPAN-2s Book TV and was a guest at the Museum of the City of New York. It was awesome. Wanting to get back to what I really wanted to write, I began a serial killer novel called A Reason To Kill. I ran this through a writers critique group I found as a result of the first book, and the process took me a hell of a long time. They ripped on me because they said the book had no protagonist - nobody they could really get behind. I lost confidence in A Reason To Kill and shelved it. I began writing a book first called A Faceless Evil, then Negative Lives, then finally, Generation Evil. This was about reincarnating witches who, with each reincarnation, forget who they are and what their ultimate mission is - to kill an evil warlock named Murdock Vickar. After 53,000 words, I got so confused I bailed on it. I did not write again for 12 years. Oddly enough, a zombie book called Dead Hunger would bring me back to life. I started to see a bunch of zombie buzz on Facebook, so I thought Id read one. I read Mark Tufos Zombie Fallout. I began to think hard about writing again, and began to analyze what makes a reader fall in love with a character - or at the very least - care about them. I decided the author need only have that character say or do ONE THING that everyone can relate to. Express or show their love for someone vulnerable. Help someone. I had Flex Sheridan make a phone call to his sisters house and discover that something was very wrong. He then made a 5-hour drive to save her and his nieces Any of you would do the same thing. The rest of this is kind of history; the series sales really blew up at book 3, because I guess people then felt they had a series to attack - and from what I know about you folks, you do loooovvveeeeeee your book series. (serieses?) So thats how it all started. Were now through book seven. I hope that when you dig into Dead Hunger, youre glad it all DID start. When youre done, if you want more of me, I suggest Shifting Fears (dark and crazy) and Generation Evil (fun and trippy) and A Reason to Kill (Nobody to love.) Thanks so much to the admins of this site, and I apologize for this long dissertation. I just figured you ought to know from whence I came. I am married to Linda, and have been since October of 1986. We are dogless now that both our Whippet brothers, Beau and Brody, passed away. This does give us a certain amount of freedom - which we fully expect to take advantage of over the next few years. Who knows? We may even stop by someplace near you. (Well warn you first.) Thanks again!
