If you have never looked closely at NFC, and specifically NFC - TopicsExpress

If you have never looked closely at NFC, and specifically NFC tags, this is a cute info graphic. (NFC stands for Near Field Communications). In a nutshell, this is a little radio transmitter that is super cheap (you can buy them in bags at about $1/per tag. But in my own words, what make NFC-tags really powerful is the two part teamwork. Not just are they cheap and programmable, most phones can read them. Think of it this way: - Lets say you had a device people borrowed from you from time to time, and you want to tell them a few things about how to use it. One simple way is to write a Wiki with instructions, take the URL to that wiki and convert it to a QR code, printer that on a sticker and slap it on the device. Now a friend can point their Google Googles app at it and up comes your wiki, or video, or what ever you want. - Now you could also do this with an NFC tag. They just tap their phone against the tag, and up comes the Wiki. - Lets say you want to reduce the chance of the device being stolen. You could put a sticker telling people who owns it, and it is a QR code so they can see a picture of you and your gun, plus you could hide an NFC tag somewhere on it, and at least if police find it, and you told them about it, you might get it back. Or you might even get it back from the person that ends up buying it on the black market, you never know. At the very least, it is a cool way to distinguish your thing from other peoples things in a hidden way. All for about $1. - Want to move up a level? Then you go with RFID. But this requires a lot more overhead, and you need special hardware to detect it. The big upside is you can do it at a distance. So for example you could in theory install a detector outside your home, and if any of your stuff walks out the door an alarm goes off. Imagine putting that inside your expensive camera or equipment ( Judd Weiss Elisabeth de Kleer Den Bradshaw ) blog.atlasrfidstore/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/RFID_vs_NFC.jpg
