He really wanted to retire in his old age as his health was failing, but was honored to answer the call to serve the country he loved. He knows that God and His Divine Providence were involved in every way in the establishment of this nation to allow people to be free and so he wanted to humbly serve his Creator. He wanted to make sure a REPUBLICAN form of government would remain in this nation. He only wanted a minimal compensation, only as little as needed to do the job but didnt want to put a burden on the nation for his compensation as he felt it was his duty to serve. He wanted to emphasize that this nation is really governed by the Hand of God and must always act according to his ways put forth in order fo this nation to survive.
