If you have seen my posts on Facebook you know I like apocalyptic movies, shows, & books. Divergent, Falling Skies, defiance, preppers, the Last Ship. These are also popular in society at large. As I contemplate this it seems to me we look to life and death struggles against aliens, pandemics, or climate catastrophes because such struggles would allow us to come together with out doing the hard work of reconciliation. Our society faces an existential adversary, but its is not one of the antagonists listed above. This adversary is much more sinister, it comes from within. Our inability to see each other as human beings is that dilemma. We see race, religion, orientation, class and many other things that divide us rather than seeing the human being behind the hyperbolic mask of easily categories which deny true interaction. We cant have community if we dont engage each other to find what we have in common.
