If you have thoughts of suicide, consider developing a safety plan - TopicsExpress

If you have thoughts of suicide, consider developing a safety plan and keeping it somewhere that is easily accessible in a time of crisis. This safety plan can include calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contacting another trusted individual such as a counselor when you are in crisis. Your safety plan should include coping strategies or activities that you can do to distract you from your thoughts of suicide. Think of activities you would actually engage in and that reduce your feelings of stress and thoughts of suicide. Examples could include but are not limited to reading, writing, going for a walk, or spending time with a pet. Your safety plan should also include steps you can take to keep yourself safe for the time being until you can reach out for help. This means removing harmful objects or substances from your surroundings. Your safety plan could also include any dreams, passions or goals since these can be very difficult to bring to mind in times of crisis. Last but not least, include in your safety plan your network of friends and family members that you feel close to. These are people who care about your well-being and may be able to assist you in reaching out for help.
