If you havent already, run dont walk to catch Thomas Allen Harris documentary Through A Lens Darkly! (see Raki Parekhs post from Nov.9) This is the last night it screens at the Laemmles Playhouse 7 in Pasadena ($8, showtimes at 5:30 and 7:45). Saw it last night - twice! It is truly inspirational in its personal and political narrative and imagery! Thomas was on my MFA committee at UCSD, and Deborah Willis, whose work and words are heavily featured, was my mentor (as she has been to so many photographers, artists and historians) when I interned at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture during my final year as an undergraduate. That was one of the most enriching experiences of my intellectual and creative life, and this film is essentially a crash seminar in the poetics and dynamics of representation in black history!
