If you havent already seen Belle, please do! Belle is a beautiful film set in 18th century England where the mixed-race African daughter of a Navy sailor is raised by her Uncle who just happens to be the Supreme Court justice of England. Based on a true story, the film focuses on a historic case of the Zhong slave ship and how the decision made because of it changed the course of African history in Britain forever and the history altering role Dido Belle Lindsay played in that change. The film deals with so many issues including racism, aversion to racial mixing, slavery, misogyny, and other cultural issues that are still very much an issue today. On top of being staggeringly historically accurate, the film also passed the Bechdel test with flying colors (yay!). Absolutely beautiful film. Breakout star Gugu Mbatha Raw (who is also starring in Beyond The Lights), and Sam Reid are an electric pair in this truly dynamic story about interracial love, racial awareness, and justice in the face of danger.
