If you havent heard 8 out of the 15 chicks that I raised this past - TopicsExpress

If you havent heard 8 out of the 15 chicks that I raised this past spring are roosters Yes, they were all supposed to be hens but they sadly, are not so now of course we have a problem with 8 crowing birds every morning.Neither John or I want to do The deed, We seemed to have gotten more attached to this batch than in years past., but this afternoon while John was out with my brother I decided to man upand make my family a fresh roasted chicken for dinner. While I searched YouTube for more humane ways to kill chickens I told Jack to go find daddys pocket knife. ( It seems slitting their throat is the method of choice these days in family farming ) IVE GOT THIS!! I announced ( Jack and Max were unfazed by my deceleration) I grabbed the knife and walked to the coop with what can only be described as fierce determination. I can do thisI chanted in my head. As I opened the door they scattered, climbing over each other as I grabbed blindly at feathers and feet. Finally I was able to grab one. He flailed wildly at first and then quickly settled cradled in my arms. I looked around for a tree stump or flat surface to carry out my mission. Not in front of the horses I said. Definitely not in front of the chickens! Ok I saw my spot ... In front of an old wooden shed that had a rotting deck. That would be perfect. I sat down and turned him around so I could feel for the artery in his neck. It was pounding wildly even though he seemed relaxed and comfortable in my arms. I turned him on his side so I would have easy access and make his ending as quick as painless as possible and it was then that I noticed he was looking right at me , squinting in the bright sunlight but definitely curious as to what all this was about. It was right then, in that moment that I decided .......................to make spaghetti .
