If you hold a northern pike or walleye up by its eye sockets like - TopicsExpress

If you hold a northern pike or walleye up by its eye sockets like they use to do in the old days, you squeeze their optic nerves into their brain and they die a slow death. For smaller pike: You can use a back-of-the-head grip while holding the fish vertically. For Larger pike/musky: You can use an under-the-gill-cover grip, slide your fingers in the V shape of the gill under the jaw, remember to support the belly and hold horizontally. Avoid touching the gill rakers, which are visibly red, dont bend the head upwards, which can damage the fishs spine. Release as quickly as possible: Fish kept out of the water for more than one minute have a greatly diminished chance of survival, once a pike/musky has been out of the water for three minutes, it has virtually no chance of survival, even after it swims away. Lets show them the respect that they deserve, whether we selectively harvest or release them! #SR
