If you know why this song never fails to lift my spirits and bring a huge smile to my heart, then you have real and personal ties to this country’s history. Your story includes: a Revolution, a Civil War, and every domestic or foreign battle between and after; Presidential land-grants, range wars, and gun fights; domestic servitude, sharecropping, and slavery; Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and gumbo; Hard-dirt farming, water rights, failed crops, and bowl weevils; Sunday service, daily prayers, and the Bible; and, blackberry pie, three-bean salad, and home-canned peaches. Each of you is the direct result of many generations of hard working people. People who had very little (much of the time) in the way of material goods, but had an immeasurable work ethic; surpassed only by their love of family. Each of you carries the genes and history of those who came before. Not one of you appeared under miraculous circumstances. No, you didn’t. Unfortunately, families being what they have become relatively recently, you may not know about these connections. I encourage you to make the time to learn about them. Make each of them a part of your present and your children’s future. For this side of the family, we were blessed by a woman who spent countless hours researching and verifying our history. To this day, I am in awe of her dedication in this area. Please honor not only her efforts, but the efforts of those who came together so you could be here now. Help to add more meat to the bones whenever you are able. … Finally, will somebody please find me a copy of that world famous blackberry pie recipe? I would be eternally grateful.
