If you like TCK stories or come from a decently unknown country you might like this story :) The story isnt that long, its just that Im posting in both English and Spanish! Mis amigos ticos/latinos, mas abajo la voy a escribir en Espanhol! Leanla, creo que les va a gustar :) So, Ive lived abroad nearly my entire life; first, ten years in Uzbekistan and then five in Indonesia. And every time I was asked where I was from it was always the same conversation: Im from Costa Rica. From where?? Costa Rica...its in Central America.. *person still confused* Its below Mexico and above Brazil. ohhhhh. In Indonesia, this actually happened to me once (not exaggerating here): Where are you from? Costa Rica, ohhh Australia, No...Costa Rica ohhh Australia. No, Costa Rica, Latin America mmm ya Australia. Ya sure, Australia. How is it like in Australia?? :P Eventually, when asked that question, if I didnt feel like going through the whole thing again or literally drawing them a map, I would simply say I was from Argentina or Spain (depending on which one was doing better in soccer at the moment :D). Well, yesterday I was playing in a soccer game with mostly Indonesians. Our team goalie was injured so the team captain (an Indo) asked me if I could be the goalie during the first half. I am a terrible goalie, so after all the laughing and joking around that usually takes place when talking to a Javenese person, I said, okay but the defense is going to have to be great and you have to score a lot of goals. He walked over and grabbed my dad and said, Dont worry, we have a Bryan Ruiz here! Wow. Not only did he know about the the Costa Rican soccer team, but he knew one of our players names! It was quite surreal. Then, after a decent performance as a goalie hehe, I got to play outfield. Five minutes into the second half I scored a goal. Everyone began to cheer, Wow, like Costa Rica! Go Costa Rica! One of the guys from the other team said in english (do your best Indo English accent, Ya! Costa Rica is the besttt! Later on in the game I scored again. It was crazy. All my Indonesian friends who just a month ago probably didnt know anything about Costa Rica, were cheering, Ya Costa Rica! playing like Costa Rica! Youre in the big eight (quarter finals)! I gotta say, it was quite a memorable moment. :) Thanks Sele! We ticos are finally in the map of the Asian world! ufff ahora en Español! Bueno, he vivido fuera de Costa Rica casi toda mi vida; primero vivi diez años en Uzbekistan y después cinco en Indonesia. En estos dos países, cada vez que me preguntaban de que pais venia era siempre la misma conversación: Soy de Costa Rica. De donde?? De Costa Rica... esta en Centro-América. *persona todavía confundida* Se encuentra al sur de México y al norte de Brasil ahhhhh. Eventualmente, cuando no tenia ganas de repetirlo todo de nuevo o hasta dibujarle un mapa a la gente, decía que era de Argentina o España (dependiendo de a quien le estaba yendo mejor en el fútbol :D) Pues, ayer estaba jugando un partido de fut donde la mayoría de la gente era Indonesia. Nuestro portero estaba lesionado y el capitán del equipo (Un Indonesia) me pregunto si yo podía ser el portero. Después de vacilar un montón, como normalmente ocurre con Javaneses, dije que si, pero que la defensa iba tener que ser muy buena y que tendrían que meter muchos goles. El se le acerco a mi papa, le puso las manos encima y dijo, Tranquilo, aquí tenemos a un Bryan Ruiz! El no solo conocía sobre la Sele pero se sabia el nombre de uno de nuestros jugadores! Casi no me lo podía creer. Después de un primer tiempo donde me la jugué como portero, me toco jugar delantero. A los cinco minutos de haber comenzado el primer tiempo metí un gol. Inmediatamente todo la gente de mi equipo gritaba wooo Costa Rica! Igual que Costa Rica! Uno de los jugadores del otro equipo grito en Inglés, Costa Rica es el mejorr! De la gran incredulidad solo me podía reír! Mas adelante, volví a marcar un gol. Fue una locura. Otra vez todos gritaban Eso Costa Rica!! Estas jugando igual que Costa Rica! woo están entre los ocho grandes! Fue uno de esos momentos que no creo que vaya a olvidar. :) Gracias Sele! Por fin estamos en el mapa del mundo Asiático!
