If you listen to a lot of speeches, like I do because I am a huge dork, you find that there are some people who consistently write ones that instantly click for you. Their style jives with the way you listen and think. Aaron Sorkin is decidedly in that camp for me: his prodigious ego aside, he has a remarkable grip on words, and the romance he clearly feels for writing is right up in front of every single word he writes. Its infectious, addicting, and I love it. But then there are some people who dont quite fit with you. As much as I love all things Steve Jobs, he was that way for me--an undeniably great speaker, but a pretty terrible speechwriter. Ive listened to every keynote he ever gave and most of his public speeches and he just never really clicked. Except for one speech. Jobs Stanford commencement address is, oddly, one of my favorite speeches of all time. Turns out thats because Sorkin helped him write it.
