If you live in or near NYC and wish to choose a play to see – choose Constellations by Nick Payne, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson. It is intellectually challenging, emotionally evocative, funny, sad, and humane. Ben Brantley of the NY Times says that this “supremely articulate play” is “the most sophisticated date play Broadway has seen.” Constellations is about the huge impact of chance and even the smallest choices we make on our lives. It shows how, at any given time, several different outcomes exist simultaneously. It applies physics: string theory, relativity, and quantum mechanics to a boy-meet-girl narrative (Ben Israeli, you would like this). It repeats the same scenes – replayed with small changes – to show “the infinitudes of might have been alternatives,” and how lives and relationships can be altered by factors ranging from choice of words, tone of voice, previous relationships, luck... I saw Constellation yesterday, and I can’t stop thinking about it. “Who among us hasn’t tried to reconstruct a moment from our lives that had further-reaching consequences than we ever expected?” Yes, you are likely to see yourself in Constellation…
